An Update on Netflix’s Sharing
There has been a lot of reporting in recent months regarding Netflix, be it the clamp down on password sharing or the introduction of Basic With Ads (Netflix's lower priced ad supported plan).
Netflix has always made it easy to share accounts with features like profiles and multiple streams. However the company now claims over 100 million households are sharing accounts. This is impacting the company's ability to invest new TV and films.
In the coming months, password sharing will become a thing of the past. This will ensure that Netflix can continue to invest in great TV and film content for their viewers.
In addition to the above, the introduction of Basic with Ads will be coming down the line, however, there is no exact date confirmed for Ireland yet. The platform will most likely be similar to other countries where is has been rolled out:
Ads will be 15” or 30” in length and will play before and during shows and films.
You will have access to one streaming account with up to five profiles (at the same address) with no access to download content.
Ultimately, Netflix needs more revenue, and the removal of password sharing and introduction of an ad supported subscription plan are the ways they hope to achieve their goal. This doesn’t mean all subscribers will have to watch advertising since existing plans will stay ad-free, but there will now be a choice between a cheaper ad-supported plan and a premium one.
